I absolutely hate moving. In the past it has caused arguments between me and my husband. It’s just unpleasant. I also realize how much junk we don’t need that we’ve accumulated and that there were a lot of nooks and crannies that I could’ve cleaned better.
Well, this past week we have been moving again. Now, while it is still not a lot of fun, I did much better this time. I was much less grumpy and scrambled and much more put together and pleasant. I guess five moves in six years makes you better at the whole thing. That is why today I’m going to give you some tips and tricks on how to make moving easier.
I once left all my packing until the very last week. Don’t be like that person. Ever. I actively avoid doing that now because it really is the worst thing you can do in a move. I now start packing and organizing at least a month before I need to be out. You probably own items that you don’t want to get rid of, but aren’t essential. Pack them up now. Getting all those little things out of your way makes a huge difference.
Donate and Throw Away
Don’t pack with the intention of keeping everything. Me and my husband (and now our nine month old) accumulate a lot of things we don’t need. It’s okay to out grow your possessions. Make three different piles: donate, throw away, and keep. Try only to keep the things that you need or genuinely mean something to you. I ended up keeping two pregnancy shirts and getting rid of a bunch of other pregnancy outfits. They’re cute, but ultimately just taking up space since I’m not planning on having another baby any time soon.
Don’t just take your junk drawer and throw it in a box. If you organize now you’re not stuck doing it when you get to your new home. Besides skipping out on organizing now may mean that you’re packing things that you could have thrown away. Why make yourself carry all that extra weight now?
If you have people you can ask for help, ask them. Even if you’re just asking them to keep an eye on any kids or pets while you’re moving things around for the day. If your kids are older, get your kids to help. If your pets are well trained, have them put their toys in a box. Any help you can get will make things easier on you!
Remember the Positive
Don’t focus on the negatives of getting everything packed and moving things. You’re moving to a brand new place and that’s fun! You get to decorate a new place and create memories somewhere new. You won’t be moving forever. You can do this!
Now it’s your turn! How do you handle moves? Do you have any other tips for me? I’m pretty much moving every year, so I’ll take all the help I can get! Let me know in the comments!
Thank you so much for coming and I’ll see you next time!
