One day you get your working area all set up, you sit down to get ready to write, and something terrible happens. You have absolutely nothing to say. No ideas, no thoughts, nothing. Writers block happens to everyone. The important thing is that you are able to overcome it and are able to put out content that is enjoyable for others and that you can be somewhat proud of.
The trouble is actually getting over that writer’s block. Today we’re going to list out some of the ways that you can overcome it and keep on writing!
If you have a designated work area it’s highly possible that that location just isn’t stimulating your creative senses in the right way today. Go somewhere else. Grab your laptop (notebook, phone, etc.) and change spots. Go to a completely different area in your house, go outside, go to the coffee shop, or the library.
Honestly, you could go to a different spot in the room if you don’t want to go too far. The point here is to just mix it up a little bit. You know when you leave a room to get something, forget what it is, and go back to the room where you knew what you needed to help you remember? It’s kind of like that, but we’re looking for a better creative spot.
Go for a walk, do yoga, dance, go for a run. It doesn’t matter too much what you’re actually doing here. Just get your blood flowing. Exercise is a good way to help relax you. If you have writer’s block you’re probably beating yourself up and not feeling too relaxed. Do a quick exercise routine (I personally do yoga) and then when you’re done, go ahead and give some writing a try again.
Get Rid of Distractions
Turn your phone off, get off of the internet (you can write in a google document or a notepad instead), turn off the TV. Please, please, turn off the TV! Clean up your works area as well. Dedicate a time period where you are going to just sit there and completely focus on the task at hand.
Maybe you have some ideas but you just can’t figure out how to turn them into something you can actually write about. Jot them all down. Whatever random and silly thoughts that pop up into your head, write it down. Even if you don’t necessarily have any ideas, write things that start popping into your head. One of them can turn into something you can write about now and the others may help you when you’re stuck later.
Look, you’re not going to overcome writer’s block by avoiding writing. So you are going to have to start writing. Maybe you’ve gone through all the tips from all the websites and they just didn’t work. It’s time to start writing. I know it’s hard to even start writing when you’re feeling stuck. Get over that first hurdle. Start typing and/or get the pen on the paper. Challenge yourself to write about something, even if it’s something random that you don’t plan on sharing with people.
Still seem impossible? I know it did to me.
This past week I was coming up with excuse after excuse on why I wasn’t writing. I was just putting it off until I finally got to where I am at this point. I went through each of the steps above. I moved me and my daughter into a completely different area of the house, I left my phone behind, I managed to get a bit of yoga in and played with her, and then I sat and I wrote. It started off as a brainstorming session and it morphed into something I was proud to be able to put out into the world.
Remove the pressure you’re putting on yourself and just write because you can. Who cares if it starts off bad? That’s why we edit and read our work. You will overcome your block!
